Urinary Tract Infections in Older Adults

Urinary Tract Infections are a common health condition among individuals. However, older adults with frail health are at risk of hospitalization and even death due to UTIs. Furthermore, the classic signs of UTI in older adults do not readily show, perhaps due to a slower immune response. Among the risk factors for UTI in seniors may include urinary retention or other diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.

Thus, to lessen the occurrence and severe effects of UTIs, older adults are encouraged to:

  • Drink plenty of water (8-10 glasses per day)
  • Take care of genital and urinary hygiene, such as changing incontinence briefs or not resisting the urge to pee
  • Avoid drinking coffee or alcohol, which can irritate the bladder
